Toronto is known as a city of neighbourhoods. Cabbagetown, Little Italy, Kensington Market, The Danforth, Forest Hill — distinguished by their architecture, great restaurants or unique shops. Absent from tourist brochures are Toronto's 13 priority neighbourhoods, identified and named by the Strong Neighbourhood Task Force, a United Way-City of Toronto collaboration that looked into ways to strengthen the social infrastructure of neighbourhoods facing the greatest need across the city.
This project combines moving images with maps to emphasisize the necessity for a place-based approach that is critical for government and social service agencies to reduce poverty in our city.
The mixed media place based approach is inspired by a virtual trip of the Trans Siberian Railway. This work-in-progress uses open source HTML, CSS, XML & Javascript written and edited using a free Ubuntu text editor. Time lapsed images were captured with a Canon SD870IS & edited in-camera. Free (but commercial) utilities, YouTube Javascript player API and the Google maps API power and host the map and video. Much of the Javascript and base code was borrowed from Geoff Stearns' mashup, who was inspired by a now defunct Google Video mashup.
